Giving Thanks

I am first thankful for all of the positive male role models hockey provides.  As a single mother, I can do “dad” things, but my son needs the balance of perspective.  I can throw a ball around the yard or take him to a game or even teach him how to jumpstart a car, but he needs the male influence to balance out my nurturing and tendency towards over protection.   I am thankful for all of the coaches, referees, managers, league officials, and trainers who selflessly and tirelessly volunteer their time for the love of the game.  Yes, I said...

The View

I recently joined a hockey mom group thinking, well, honestly, I don’t know what I was thinking now.  I would not sit anywhere near many of them at a game after seeing some of the things they are saying on social media.  They are definitely not my people.  There were so many posts complaining about referees, and look, I get it.  I’ve been pretty mad during a few games in my time, but the honest truth is it didn’t affect the outcome.  We didn’t lose any games because of the referees.  We didn’t win any either, and if you think...

If you’ve done some math and think you can make a little money from billeting, I’m here to tell you that you might want to consider a different side hustle.  It is truly astonishing how much hockey boys can eat, and I don’t know of a single person who has ever come out ahead financially...

Crazy Train

Fear, worry, and stress are normal during a pandemic because so much is out of our control, but for many young athletes, this might be their first big obstacle to overcome.  They may have learned how to deal with a bad call, a minor injury, or a tough opponent, but border closures, teams going dark, seasons getting delayed indefinitely, and all of the other uncertainty is having an effect on these players whether they admit it or not.  They’ve been taught that when facing adversity, you win or lose, and up until this point, most of them have been able...
